New name unveiled for large cargo development at Newcastle Airport

A large new load -built load built at Newcastle Airport can create thousands of jobs and increase the North -Eastern economy by up to £ 165m a year.

The site of 750,000 square meters, which is officially the name Airlink, will serve as an important pivot for freight operators, freight exhibitors and land handling agents.

The development is brought to the market by the airport in collaboration with commercial real estate partner Naylors Gavin Black.

The new name of the website was unveiled at Mipim- a four-day real estate and investment conference held in Cannes, France, which brings together key players in the real estate industry, including investors, developers and business programs.

Airlink was one of several new development sites that had to be displayed by the Newcastle and Invest Newcastle City Council during the event, which highlights the strong investment potential of the North East.

Alice Andreasen, chief sustainability and communications officer at Newcastle Airport, said: “Airlink is a landmark development that can create high-quality jobs, generate millions for the local economy and unlock new opportunities for businesses.

“The presentation of this project at Mipim was an incredible opportunity to showcase the great potential of the North East on a global stage and strengthen its status as an excellent destination for investment.

“We look forward to working with the Newcastle City Council to bring Airlink alive, and further strengthen the region as an important pivot for international trade and economic growth.”

“The Newcastle Airport plays a central role to ensure that our city remains an attractive and accessible destination, and the development of Airlink will provide a home for the ambitious, export -oriented businesses we want to bring to Newcastle,” said Michelle Percy, director of investment and growth in Newcastle City Council.

“With the potential to create thousands of high quality jobs, Airlink will strengthen the region’s logistics and supply chain capabilities, supporting the most important sectors such as advanced manufacturing and life sciences.”

Airlink, located south of the runway, will provide its occupiers direct apron access, so that cargo can be loaded and downloaded from aircraft quickly and efficiently.

This makes it an ideal location for businesses that handle time sensitive consignments, such as pharmaceutical products, auto parts and other deliveries with high priority.

The site also has excellent transport links and the proximity to the A1 will ensure that goods can be moved quickly over the UK.

Once built, Airlink was able to generate up to 1400 direct jobs, with an additional 1,200 roles created by supply chains and with business partners.

The development will play an important role in supporting the growing cargo operations of the airport, which achieved a record height to handle more than 6,000 tonnes in 2024.

The search for businesses to occupy Airlink is already underway. A planning application will be filed later this year and the airport has a preferred developer for the website.

“We are delighted to work with the Newcastle Airport to bring out this exciting much -needed development, where units are proposed from 8,000 square meters to 170,000 square meters, can be suitable for a variety of uses to include air freight, cargo, logistics and advanced manufacturing,” said Keith Stewart, partner at Naylors Gavin Black.

“Along with a delivery partner and in line with the ambitions of the airport, we will promote the website and the available opportunities and Mipim will be the beginning of the process.”
